Reinterpretation リインタープリテーション
マシュー・アベは、ニュージーランドのオークランドで生まれ育ったフォトグラファーです。
ニュージーランドの人々は大自然の中でシンプルな暮らしを営み、おおらかでフレンドリーな国民性です。そして、歴史的にも原住民ともうまく調和し、移民や多文化を寛容に受け入れています。
幼少期からマシューを取り巻く環境は、世界各国から家族と共に移民してきた仲間たちに囲まれ、その影響を多大に受けてきました。彼らの独自性や文化的感受性に触れ、身近にある草原、海、山などの自然に感謝して、マイノリティーを尊重する姿勢を育みました。
この生い立ちを通じて、マシューは芸術的ビジョンの基盤となる柔軟な視点「オープンマインド」を身につけました。
しかし、自分が経験した特別な環境をそのまま再現し、人々をより「オープンマインド」にすることは難しいと理解しています。代わりにこの展示を通じて、来場者に視点を変える機会を提供し、広く開放的な思考を促すことが狙いです。
現在、某香料会社のエバリュエーターとして、日々オリジナリティーに富んだ香りを探求するマシュー。その自身の経験を活かし、視覚と嗅覚をユニークに組み合わせた作品を、ファッションを基調とした作品を展示します。
「Reinterpretation リインタープリテーション」は私たちの先入観に問いかけ、来場者ひとりひとりを「オープンマインド」にする招待状です。このショーケースは、判断を急ぎがちな現代社会において、このショーケースは未知のものに好奇心を持って接したときに待ち受ける、美と驚きを再認識させてくれます。
この感覚的な旅を通じて、マシューは人々の先入観に挑戦し、オープンマインドがいかに創造的で私たちの世界を彩ることができるかを示したいと願っています。
Matthew Abe is a photographer born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. From an early age, his world was shaped by the rich tapestry of multiculturalism that surrounded him, which led him to embrace being unique. While Matthew acknowledges that he can't recreate the unique societal conditions of his childhood for his audience, he believes in the power of art to open minds. Through this exhibition, the aim is to provide viewers with an exercise in perspective-shifting, encouraging them to think more openly and challenge their preconception.
Drawing from a background in the fragrance industry, the artist uniquely combines visual and olfactory elements to distort and then recreate perception. Each segment of storytelling photographs is presented with a base of fashion to highlight the gap between art and everyday life.
"Reinterpretation" is an invitation to challenge our preconceptions. In a world which often rushes into judgement, this showcase reminds us of the beauty and surprise that await when we approach the unfamiliar with curiosity rather than prejudice.
Through this sensory journey, Matthew hopes to challenge presumption, and demonstrate how open-mindedness can colour our world with creativity.
