In 1974, barely 29 years old, I went to China for the first time, with a group of water experts and an Instamatic camera. I returned in 1980 with another group of water experts and an OM-1. Each of these visits were for a month and included extensive tours of the areas where the water projects were or were planned, often far away from the major cities. In 1984, I lived in Beijing for 8 months, and made frequent visits to the countryside.
I saw a China that has since changed beyond recognition, one that has vanished except in the memories of older generations. In the prints in this exhibit, created from the colour slides that I snapped back then, I share with you some of those memories of landscapes, people and animals.
